India's most prestigious examination, selecting officers for the IAS, IPS, IFS and other central services through a three-stage process.
Eligibility
- Age: 21 to 32 years for General/EWS (as on 1 August of the exam year); up to 35 for OBC-NCL and 37 for SC/ST, with further relaxation for PwBD.
- Attempts: 6 for General/EWS, 9 for OBC-NCL, unlimited for SC/ST within the age limit.
- Qualification: Graduation in any discipline from a recognised university.
Exam pattern & selection
- Preliminary (400 marks · 2 papers)General Studies I (200) and CSAT (200, qualifying at 33%). Objective, with 1/3 negative marking. Qualifying stage only.
- Main (1750 merit marks · 9 papers)Two qualifying language papers, one Essay (250), four General Studies papers (1000) and two Optional-subject papers (500).
- Personality Test / Interview (275 marks)A board interview assessing suitability for public service. Final merit = Mains (1750) + Interview (275) = 2025 marks.
Selection: Prelims (screening) → Mains (written) → Interview → final merit and service allocation.
